It is time for your annual influenza vaccine! Once again, the Center for Disease Control is again recommending that all people 6 months and upward receive the flu vaccine. October is the ideal month in which to receive the flu vaccine, but the vaccine is effective as long as it is received at least 2 weeks prior to exposure. The prime influenza months are from November through March.
Components in the flu vaccine are all “inactivated”. This means that one cannot get influenza from any of the current influenza vaccines. The most common reaction is to have site redness or soreness where the vaccine was given.
Influenza vaccines are especially important for children under 5 years of age, those with chronic medical problems and those with lung conditions. By receiving a flu vaccine, you decrease your risk of getting sick with influenza, which often lasts for 5-10 days. CDC recommendations are that if you do get sick with influenza, do not go to work or school until 1 week after the start of the illness, in order to limit the potential spread of influenza.
We are really excited to offer our employees our new Activate Health & Wellness Center employee clinic! I believe this benefit supports our employees and their families in a way that is unique to our district and community. It shows a commitment to the personal wellness of not only our employees, but also their families. I am confident that as we take advantage of the clinic, we will all see various benefits in the short and long term. I hope you are as excited about this offering as I am. I’m looking forward to employees being able to see the clinic first hand for their annual wellness check and encourage everyone to take full advantage of the day-to-day benefits of the clinic as the year progresses.
